Junooniyat by Areej Shah

Junooniyat is novel by Areej Shah based on Vani, a tribal custom exist in some areas of Pakistan. Areej Shah made Amaya the central character of the novel who was made the victim of Vani. She was forced to marry, Zaryam another character of the novel.

Vani

Vani (Urdu: ونی), or Swara (سوارہ), is a custom found in parts of Pakistan where girls, often minors, are given in marriage or servitude to an aggrieved family as compensation to end disputes, often murder. Vani is a form of arranged or forced child marriage, and the result of punishment decided by a council of tribal elders named jirga.

Story of Junooniyat Novel

The writer illustrated the ill treatment of Amaya by her in laws including his husband because of her marriage of Vani. The novel also highlights the effects of forced marriage through the character of Khadash Kazmi and Desham. Haram and Sayam are another two important characters of this novel.

Theme of the Novel

The novelist portrayed the man as of an alpha masculine. Areej Shah also elaborates the feelings and sensitiveness of woman towards love and marriage in Pakistani society. She present the hero as a rude man while the heroine as a submitted one.
