Parveen Shakir was born on November 24, 1952, in Karachi. She started writing early in her life. Besides being a poet, she qualified for the CSS exam, one of the toughest exams in Pakistan, and became a civil servant in the customs department. She passed away in a car accident on December 26, 1994, in Islamabad, at the age of 42.

Parveen Shakir brought a unique feminine perspective to Urdu poetry. She included the themes of romanticism, intimacy, loyalty, sensitiveness, and distrust in her ghazals. She was awarded the Pride of Performance Award by the Government of Pakistan in 1990. Her famous books include Khushboo, Khud Kalami, Inkar, and Sad Barg.
